Resources for Coping with Anxiety

Common Signs of Anxiety

Place a check beside each sign that you may have experienced in the past six weeks.

  1. Difficulty sleeping – insomnia, problem staying asleep or restless sleep.
  2.  Muscle tension, headaches or other tension related aches and pains.
  3.  Physical symptoms – nausea, rapid or pounding heartbeat, difficulty breathing, discomfort in chest, shaking, sweating, feeling dizzy or faint.
  4.  Difficulty concentrating or staying focused.
  5.  Feeling keyed up, restless or on edge.
  6.  “What if” worry. Worry about the future.
    Example “What if I have a car accident.”
  7.  Easily fatigued, feeling overwhelmed or trying to do too much.
  8.  Focused on someone else’s problem or concern and trying to get them to change.
  9.  Thoughts or dreams about a painful memory.
  10.  Specific unreasonable fears – heights, bridges, social situations, small spaces, etc.

Tips for Coping with Anxiety

  1. Increase your support from friends, family, church and professionals.
  2. Continue to have fun.
  3. Change your diet. Avoid caffeine and processed foods.
  4. Exercise regularly.
  5. Drink plenty of water.
  6. Avoid focusing on the “glass being half empty” and build a gratitude list.
  7. Learn the power tools for managing anxiety.
  8. Journal your feelings.
  9. Identify a specific problem and create an action plan.
